7 Headshot Tips for guys
To any man that might read this, lets be honest. We kind of have it easy when it comes to dressing up. If you go with the basics, you cannot fail! But somehow doing whats easy, can be a challenge, you might find that you have too many options or not enough options. For that reason, I’ve laid out 7 easy tips for the fellas, when preparing for your next headshot session to help you narrow in on your idea headshot fit.
Let’s start with the foundation of the headshot. Your style of garments…
1. Dress professionally: Choose clothing that reflects your industry and the image you want to portray. Opt for well-fitting, tailored garments that are clean and wrinkle-free. This could include a suit, dress shirt, blazer, or a polished dress shirt with or without a tie. During your session we will remix this combination so many ways. The key here is a well fitting clothes, honestly. Even if you only have one button up that fits properly, bring it to your session ironed and that will do the job.
2. Stick to solid colors: Solid colors tend to work best for headshots as they are less distracting and allow the focus to remain on your face. Classic colors like black, navy blue, charcoal gray, and white are safe choices. Consider your skin tone and eye color when selecting the most flattering hues. If you have any questions about this, lets discuss it during your consultation call.
3. Avoid busy patterns and logos: Patterns, especially busy ones, can distract from your face and take away from the professional look of your headshot. Additionally, logos can date the photo and limit its usability. It's best to steer clear of both.
4. Layering can add depth: Layering can add visual interest and depth to your headshot. For instance, you can wear a suit jacket or a blazer over a dress shirt. This allows for different looks and gives your photographer the opportunity to capture a variety of shots during the session.
5. Pay attention to necklines: The neckline of your clothing should frame your face nicely. Avoid deep V-necks or excessively high collars, as they can either expose too much chest or make your neck appear shorter. A classic crew neck or a button-down shirt with a few buttons undone can work well.
6. Don't forget about grooming: Alongside clothing, pay attention to your grooming. Ensure your hair is well-styled, and consider getting a fresh haircut a week before the session. Maintain clean and well-groomed facial hair, or consider shaving for a clean-shaven look. Neat and clean fingernails are also important.
7. Bring options: It's a good idea to bring a few different outfits to the session. This allows your photographer to assess what works best for your specific features and the desired style. Discuss your options with the photographer to get their input on what will work well with the background and lighting.
Remember, the goal of your headshot is to present yourself as confident and professional. By following these tips and collaborating with your photographer, you can ensure that your clothing choices contribute to a successful and impactful headshot session.
