Headshot F.A.Q

Over the past decade, I have done hundreds of headshots, ranging from individual sessions to entire Fortune 500 organizational headshot campaigns. My experience has allowed me to develop an expertise with guiding my clients through their experience with me. Through this blog post, I hope to be able to prepare clients and hopefully answer some high level questions. If you may have any other questions, please feel free to contact me using the inquiry form!

Lets start with the basics in this post -

1. What is a headshot?

A headshot is a professional photograph that focuses on an individual's face, typically from the shoulders up. It is commonly used for professional profiles, resumes, corporate websites, social media, and other marketing materials.

2. Why do I need a professional headshot?

A professional headshot is essential for creating a strong first impression. It helps to convey your professionalism, approachability, and personality. Headshots are commonly used in industries such as business, acting, modeling, and online networking.

3. How can I prepare for my headshot session?

To prepare for your headshot session, you can start by selecting appropriate attire that aligns with the purpose and industry of your headshot. It's also helpful to practice different facial expressions and poses in front of a mirror. Additionally, make sure to get a good night's sleep, stay hydrated, and avoid excessive sun exposure or alcohol before your session.

4. How long does a headshot session take?

The duration of a headshot session can vary depending on the photographer and the package you choose. On average, a session can last anywhere from 15 minutes to 45 minutes. Prior to your session, we schedule a consultation call. These are not always needed, but they do help! During this call, we will discuss your goals for the headshot and its purpose. If you have a more complex need, you session might take longer - but THAT’S OKAY! Our number one priority is making sure our clients get THE SHOT! Through out the session we direct and collaborate our clients to ensure they feel confident in their poses and how the photos look.

5. Where does the headshot session take place?

Headshot sessions can take place in a photography studio, outdoors, or in a location that aligns with the desired look and feel of your headshots. Currently our home base studios are in Hartford and New Haven, but we are also able to bring all necessary studio equipment as needed, per clients request!

6. What should I wear for my headshot?

80% of my clients ask this question. Choosing the right attire is crucial for a successful headshot. It's generally recommended to wear solid colors that complement your skin tone and eye color. Avoid busy patterns, logos, and distracting accessories. Dress professionally in clothing that reflects your industry or the image you want to convey.

7. Can I bring multiple outfits to my session?

Yes, bringing multiple outfits is a great idea as it allows for more variety in your headshot portfolio. If this is something you are considering, be sure to bring this up during the consultation call. We will accomodate by scheduling sufficient time in the studio for wardrobe changes.

8. Can you help with hair and makeup?

We have a network of vendors we work with and we would love to incorporate them into the shoot. If you would like hair and makeup done while at the studio, please consider that this would require its own timeframe, which will require extended studio fee and session fee. These services are not included in our standard sessions, however if this is something that is needed, please discuss this during the consulatation call.

9. How do I choose the best headshot from the session?

After the session, we will provide you with a selection of the best images for you to review. You may either review them in the studio on the computer, or in an online gallery. Take your time to carefully evaluate each photo, considering factors such as expression, lighting, and overall appeal. If you need assistance, your photographer can provide guidance and recommendations.

10. What is the typical turnaround time for receiving the final images?

The turnaround time for receiving the final images can vary depending on the photographer's workload and the number of images you select. Generally, we strive to deliver the edited and retouched images within 1 week, but we typically target 3 business days. However, it's always a good idea to discuss this timeline with your photographer to manage expectations.

Remember, these answers are general in nature, and specific details may vary depending on your unique requirements. It's always recommended to communicate all of your expectations to ensure a smooth and successful experience.

Is there anything that I missed? What other questions might be out there, feel free to send me any you might have?
